Good call: Longtime referee shares expertise as Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame president • Current

Mark Baltz has been joking that on the day a referee is elected as president of the Indiana Basketball Federation, every coach who dies in the state will roll in his grave.

In June 2021, after Baltz was appointed president of the group, he was driving home when he heard on the radio that southern Indiana was experiencing an earthquake.

“This is my story and I cling to it,” said the Zionsville resident. “I would not be president of the Indiana Basketball Association if I did not agree with everyone who led this game and all the big people associated with Hoosier Hysteria. It is just a pleasure and a great thing to be in it. We all inside for kids. Many people have lost sight of that. It’s not for the officials. Many young officers think they are the center of attraction.

“The last compliment you can get is to show up, and after two hours no one will know you’re here. It doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, it’s very rewarding.”

Baltz will receive two major awards this year. He will be awarded the 2022 Hall of Fame Award for his contribution to Indiana basketball in addition to being an Indiana high school athlete or Indiana high school coach.

An 43-year-old Indiana high school basketball officer and 50-year-old athletic director, Baltz led Indiana High School basketball games from 1971 to 2013. He was a 2005 recipient of the IHSAA and the Association of Athletes. National Team 2013 Recipient of the Indiana Basketball Center of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Baltz, 73, has worked in 38 divisions, 26 districts, six districts and three men’s basketball. The project that led to the project also included 15 seasons in men’s college basketball and 13 seasons of women’s college basketball.

Baltz, a retired NFL head coach (1989-2013) and treasurer of the NFL Referees Association, will receive the 2021 NFL Referees Association Honoree of the Year award this summer. The event was postponed from last year due to COVID-19 infection. Baltz has been an NFL player for 25 years and has been the treasurer of the NFL refereeing team for 15 years.

A native of Ohio, Baltz began his career while attending Ohio State University. He returned to Ft. Wayne area in 1971 before moving to Noblesville in 1980. Baltz and his wife, Nicki, have two sons, Brett and Brandon, who graduated from Noblesville High School. Brett is a Carmel resident with two children, and Brandon lives in Noblesville and has three children.

“I’ve already enjoyed the unique ideas Mark brings to the presidency of Hall of Fame,” said Chris May, Executive Director of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. “Just as he did not hesitate to remind people, he was not born in Indiana, he did not play the game here but it is clearly related by his work. Thinking of an official – calling immediately after the game – I think it brings a different decision-making process than the one we got from past leaders who were former players and coaches, and I don’t see that as a bad change.

“Through his business with the college and running the NFL, he brought in a new rolodex of numbers. In his first few days as president, he had already used some of these affiliations to help us unite. to enjoy the Indiana Basketball Center.

Baltz is dedicated to the purpose of the Hall of Fame.

“It’s about preserving the great culture alive and well so our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will take care of Indiana High School basketball culture,” Baltz said.

Prior to becoming an NFL player in 1989, Baltz served five years as a senior tennis player.

Baltz has been on the staff that has led the NFL’s five-game winning streak. Three of those times he was highly regarded as acting president. Baltz also served as an NFL European official from 1999 to 2001.

“He was crazy. It was an amazing trip,” Baltz said. “To still go out and tell stories and do what I do, it’s just love.”

Baltz was an officer in basketball in 1999 when the Lawrence North High School John Stewart, University of Kentucky recruited, collapsed and died during a Class 4A shooting in Columbus North.

“So, there are sad times, good times, bad times and everything in between,” he said. “I’m not going to exchange experiences.”

Baltz is always ready to share his knowledge. He said some officials did not know how to deal with a cowardly or intimidating coach.

“I was coached, I got my license and I joined a team,” said Baltz, who has been in charge of NCAA Division III football for seven years. “Near the former officers, I was the only one who learned from them. These kids are now not being taught how to interact with professional trainers and the like. Officials are not properly trained. They are frustrated and there are things that have nothing to do with players dismissing officials along with their parents and supporters. “

Baltz said he always wanted fans to shout at him.

“I play and during the holidays, they just unpack you,” he said. “They call you by every name in the book. I turned and smiled at them. That made them happier than anything else. “

Baltz realized that the microscope referees were under.

“It’s the only voice call in the world where you are expected to start well and just improve from there,” he said.
