Following a home opener victory over Miami University on Tuesday, Indiana traveled baseball to Queen City to face Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, in a three-game series over the weekend.
The Hoosiers dropped the opening game against the Bears on Friday, but turned the series around with improved batting to win the last two games in the series on Saturday and Sunday.
In Friday’s opening, Indiana freshman Josh Pyne hit a double with the bases full in the second half to give the team an early two-run lead. Later in the same round, the graduate student Tyler Doanes based a field player’s choice to bring home Hoosiers’ third race.
Indiana clawed two more runs before the fifth inning, with Bobby Whalen scoring on a double by Morgan Colopy in the third and a missed ball by the Missouri State court in the fourth. The Hoosiers seemed to be in control of the first game, but the Bears put together seven races in the fifth inning to steal the lead.

A three-run home run by Missouri State junior Mason Greer cut Indiana’s lead to two, and a base-filled RBI single followed by a walk helped the Bears level the game at 5-5. Senior Mason Hull then broke the deadlock with a single in two races, giving the Bears a lead they would not give back.
Indiana continued to leave runners at base, stranding seven teammates en route to the 9-7 loss Friday.
Although the Hoosiers dropped the first game in the series, the bats kept their warmth for the rest of the weekend. In Saturday’s match, the team scored 12 races to equalize the series to 1-1.
Indiana’s comeback effort in the series came through another dominant first entry on Saturday. Hoosiers ran in five races in the first lap and two in the second to jump ahead 7-0.
Ellis led Indiana with seven RBIs in the second game. Freshman Brock Tibbitts led the Hoosiers in hits, finishing 4-for-5 on the plate for a quarter of the team’s 16 total hits, most in a single game this season. Missouri State recorded just four hits that night along with three errors.
Head coach Jeff Mercer said he was pleased with the approach Hoosiers had on the plate in Saturday’s victory.
“The ability to have a long bat, the ability to work into a course that we can manage is great, but we are also aggressive with tones we can hit,” said Mercer. “The guys did a fantastic job competing, extending bat and (putting balls) into play.”
Senior Bradley Brehmer, who was transferred from Wright State University in the offseason, started his first match as Hoosier in Sunday’s league-winning victory. Brehmer earned his first win of the season after a performance with six innings, three earned races.
The Indiana attack did not let Brehmer’s debut go to waste, scoring 10 races to secure his first league win of the season. Hoosier’s bat gave Brehmer a great lead to work with from the start, scoring six runs in the first half.
The key to Indiana’s success this weekend was quick starts, as the Indiana team scored 11 combined races in the first round between the last two games in the series.
Hoosiers collected 31 races in three days. Hoosiers will then face the University of Cincinnati and Purdue University Fort Wayne on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, for a two-game home grandstand in Bloomington.
