Today’s game was really a microcosm of the whole season. Indiana is clearly the best and more talented basketball team, and they played this way for about 35 minutes. The Gophers could have easily packed it in mentally, but they didn’t. Ben Johnson has built a culture of competition and whatever the scoreboard says this team will fight as far as the sideline is concerned. With that said, Minnesota played poorly for much of this game, just as bad. The Hoosiers today firmly entered the NCAA Tournament bubble and played as a much-needed team. The whole day looks fine when the Gophers were approaching a run, Indiana shut down almost immediately, controlled the momentum for 35 minutes. This team will always have something left in them and today was more evidence.
One thing that has hurt the Gophers lately is the disappearance of Luke Loewe. After a month straight of great basketball and a 24-point performance against Northwestern, it was 2-11 against Wisconsin and was on its way to battle again today. When it started playing well, it looked like the momentum had changed. I think it’s almost become the straw that excites this team’s drink. All in all, it was pretty obvious that today they were putting themselves in a hole that was too big to dig out of.
The Gophers will now get a two-game road trip to end their regular season. Maryland on Wednesday and Northwestern on Sunday are two teams that could play in the Big Ten Tournament. The Gophers have officially taken a place in the play-off role and the Terrapins or Wildcats are their two most likely opponents. It’s pretty obvious that this team will need a magical run in the conference tournament if they want any hopes of continuing to play after that.
