Indiana softball looks to build on win streak at Bluegrass Challenge
Indiana Softball will compete this weekend at the Bluegrass Challenge in Louisville, Kentucky. Indiana will face Central Michigan University, Ohio University, Louisville University and East Kentucky University.
The Hoosiers are currently on a hot track in the tournament, winning their last five contest dates back to a 6-0 victory over Hofstra University and the Unconquered Invitational. They also played four games against Western Illinois University and Valparaiso University in the Hoosier Classic last weekend.
With the win, Indiana has achieved several awards. Freshman pitcher and first baseman Brianna Copeland was recently named Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Week following a huge outing on both the moon and plate last weekend. Indiana also currently leads the NCAA in steals per game with an average of 3.15.
“We knew she was a great two-way player,” Indiana coach Shonda Stanton said over Copeland weekend. “Having a pitcher who is so much of an athlete really pays dividends here.”
Indiana will play two games Friday and two more on Sunday. His first contest of the weekend is at 9:30 a.m. Friday against Central Michigan.
The Chippewas come away with a 9-6 record and will provide an early challenge for the Hoosiers. The Hoosiers conclude their Friday at 12:30 p.m. against Ohio.
Indiana Weekend will begin Sunday with a rematch with Louisville at 11. Louisville beats Indiana 9-5 in the season opening Feb. 11. Sunday.
Stanton said the Hoosiers are looking for more offensive production this weekend.
“We watch some movies and talk hitters count, I want more barrels,” Stanton said. “We could really extend games this weekend. I want more insults.”
The starting point for the insult so far was Junior Utility player Cora Bassett. Bassett played at a hit clinic in the Hoosier Classic, batting .750 with two home runs, six RBIs and three stolen bases. If the rest of the Hoosiers have similar offensive breakthroughs, it could mean problems for their opponents.
Indiana’s contest against Louisville is available to watch on ACCNX. His other three contests will have broadcasts available on HoosiersTV.
