Indiana forests are often a neglected segment of our Hoosier natural heritage. These are multipurpose areas used for wood production, picturesque locations and recreational activities. While there is one state forest, the Salamonie River in northern Indiana, all the others are located in southern Hoosierland. A classic example of these forests is Jackson-Washington State Forest located in two counties of the same name.
The forest is divided into two segments. One is south of Brownstown in Jackson County. The other is northeast of Salem in Washington County. The Muscatatuck River divides two parts of the forest. The Jackson County segment is located in areas of rounded high hills and is very picturesque with many spectacular views. A few can be found along Skyline Drive which is a winding, rather narrow path that climbs to a high junction near Starve Hollow State Recreation Zone. This area is part of a 281 acre forest that contains a large lake with a bathing beach, boat ramps and fishing piers. It also has a modern campsite and hiking trails that lead from the campsite to the state forest.
Near the Starve Hollow area is the 60-acre Knobstone Glades Nature Reserve. This reserve is divided into three segments and contains a number of rare plants. These plants are located in the clearing, which is an open space surrounded by trees with a limestone base. A trail called the Turkey Roost Trail leads to one of these rather small openings in the woods. The other two sites are not on the trail and are located in a very uneven part of the forest.
The other part of the northern part of the state forest is located on Highway 39, southeast of Brownstown. It also has a campsite and nice opportunities for picnics and recreation. There is a small lake and several good hiking trails. The western part of the Starve Hollow Jackson Forest section can be reached from Highway 135 also from Brownstown.
Part of the Washington State Forest is located east of Highway 135 and has a well-marked county road leading to this also very uneven junction area. Delaney Creek Washington County Park is close to State Forest and has a fairly smaller lake and a beautiful campground. The trails lead from the county park to the state forest, and this is also the northern starting point for the Knobstone trail, the longest wooded trail in Indiana. It stretches from the Delaney Creek area all the way to a series of junctions and valleys in the Clark County State Forest and finally ends in the Deam Lake State Recreation Area that I listed in the last column.
This whole region is one of the most unique parts of Indiana. The buttons stretch for miles through Jackson, Washington, Scott and Clark counties until they end up near the Ohio River near New Albany. On the Ohio River side in Kentucky the buttons continue for a few miles and are very similar to the ones you see across the Indiana River.
Numerous hiking trails can be found in the Washington County State Forest, and some are quite uneven as they pass through this hilly landscape. Part of these trails is known as the back county loop system and can provide hours of quality hiking and outdoor enjoyment.
An interesting little side trip while you’re in the area is to take Highway 235 west of 135 to the longest old covered bridge in the United States. returned to the previous state. Another interesting historical location in this region is the very historic city of Villonia which has an old restored frontier fortress dating back to the War of 1812. It is located north of 235 and west of Highway 135. As you can see this part of Indiana has much to offer.
