Indiana governor signs gun bill eliminating need for concealed-carry permits

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WXIX) – Hoosiers aged 18 and over are no longer required to obtain a firearms license.

On Monday, Governor Eric Holcomb signed House Bill 1296, saying he trusts the Hoosiers to carry guns legally and discreetly in Indiana.

Indiana is one of 23 countries with similar legislation, the governor added. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a similar law last week.

“The Second Amendment has been in dispute for years, but from time to time our Supreme Court of the United States has affirmed this fundamental constitutional right which I fully support,” Gov. Holcomb said.

Those who are banned under state or federal laws to own a firearm will not be allowed to own a firearm once the law comes into force, Gov. Holcomb explained.

Anyone who wants a permit can still do so.

Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter issued the statement following the signing of the bill, saying lawmakers will have to make changes to comply.

“As the Superintendent of the Indiana State Police, I have pledged my commitment to Governor Holcomb to work on the reform of HEA 1296. I, as Governor Holcomb, feel a great responsibility for the judiciary.

“I will work with law enforcement officials throughout our state to make the necessary changes in gun control as well as to identify the best way to identify people who are not allowed to carry firearms as defined by Indiana law.”

“We will continue to encourage residents to apply for and maintain a firearm license. The permit is for the benefit of the judiciary and also allows the permit holder to interact with other countries, ”said Carter.
