Indiana‘s bad weather season doesn’t peak until May, but this weekend came as a reminder that the season still starts in early March. At 2:05 am on Sunday morning, an EF-0 tornado was tracked just southwest of the Royal Center, Indiana, Cass County. It was confirmed that the tornado was on the ground for half a mile as it traveled northeast. The damage was caused to trees and a house by traffic, which had an estimated wind speed of 70 mph.
March tornadoes are not uncommon in the United States averaging 75 per year. In Indiana they are rare, but the state still averages about one tornado per month. While it took until June 8 last year for the state to register even a single tornado, it was only a year before a strong tornado hit the state. On March 28, 2020, an EF-2 tornado crossed the Ohio River near Newburgh, Southern Indiana. This tornado stayed on the ground for about 5 miles and produced a 125 mph wind. Two were injured and dozens of homes were damaged.
Almost all tornado configurations in March across the state of Hoosier occur when a strong low-pressure system overcomes our west. This is essential to provide the atmosphere with sufficient instability to develop strong and tornadic storms during the cold months. When this happens, we often find ourselves in the “hot sector” of the lows. This region is in the wake of a warm front and an approaching cold front. Warm air makes the atmosphere unstable while the approaching cold front adds lift and rotation; the ingredients for a potentially tornadic climate.
Fortunately, Indiana will not be subject to more adverse weather conditions for at least the next seven days. If anything, winter weather will be the thing to watch as we head towards the end of the week.
