The Indiana Pacers and veteran Big Man Tristan Thompson are going their separate ways.
The Pacers announced they are relinquishing the center Thursday, making it official. But the move was originally announced by head coach Rick Carlisle on Wednesday night, shortly after Indiana played Washington.
“He’s going to join another team,” Carlisle said after the game. He added that Thompson will be joining the Chicago Bulls. “We thanked him for what he brought with him over the last six or seven days. He brought a high level of professionalism. He did a really good job.”
The coach alluded to a small number of days because Thompson was acquired by the Pacers just over a week ago — he was part of a massive trade between Sacramento and Indiana. Thompson was only nine days with the blue and gold and only played in four games for the franchise.
Still, he provided some value for the team in that quartet of games. The 11-year-old vet averaged 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in those games. He was needed in the rotation with several injured centers for the Circle City team. Additionally, Thompson provided the now-young Pacers with veteran knowledge and helped ease the transition from Sacramento to Indiana for teammates Buddy Hield and Tyrese Haliburton.
“He helped guide me and our conversations were fantastic,” Haliburton said of Thompson.
“A hell of a way to go out,” added Haliburton. Thompson had 17 points and six rebounds in his last game with the Pacers, which resulted in a win.
While Thompson gave Indiana a few key minutes last week, Carlisle’s team probably wouldn’t need him going forward. Once the NBA All-Star hiatus ends, a group of Pacers Big Men including Myles Turner, Goga Bitadze and Isaiah Jackson could return to action, meaning Thompson would not have been in the Pacers rotation. He’ll have more value in Chicago.
To make this move, the Pacers bought Thompson out of his contract. In essence, Thompson agreed to cut the salary he had guaranteed the Pacers, knowing he would get that money back once he signed with Chicago. Indiana gains a roster spot and some financial freedom, Thompson can switch teams to a title contender without losing money, and the Bulls get the depth they need at center. It’s a win-win-win move.
“We’re going to hold onto his experience and the things he taught us,” Pacers forward Oshae Brissett said of Thompson. He mentioned that the team thanked the 2016 NBA champion for his help.
Indiana now has a roster spot as well as some financial headroom to potentially add a player. Buying out Thompson distanced the Pacers from the luxury tax, so they may bring in another body.
While there are several young free agents who could get a deal from the blue and gold, the Pacers may choose to promote one of their two-way contract players to the default roster. Forward Terry Taylor and guard Duane Washington have given Indiana good minutes all season, and they’re more than worthy of being called up to the main team. This would also allow the Pacers to field a new team member on a two-way deal in place of the promoted player.
Taylor in particular has been impressive lately. He’s averaged 12.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in his last 10 appearances while shooting over 59% from the field. His rebounding is excellent for a player his size, and his finish around the basket made the Pacers better.
Taylor said he loved the little hints Thompson gave him while he was with the Pacers. But he’s also looking forward to being the only player in the squad to be nicknamed ‘TT’ again. “Big confusion,” Taylor said when asked about two players who shared the nickname for nine days.
What the Pacers will do with the open roster spot and additional funds has yet to be determined. Those decisions will likely be made later in the All-Star break so the front office can maximize their savings. But they have options, and the current Indiana Brasswinders love options.
Thompson gave the Pacers exactly what they needed for a four-game stretch, but his age and skill didn’t match what the blue and golds needed for the rest of the season. Walking away from him is good business. Now Indiana is poised to take more steps that will improve their roster going forward.
