Indiana NAACP leaders decry education, environment bills in Statehouse

Black leaders from across Indiana on Monday weighed in on measures that would soon affect everything from education to the environment during the NAACP annual solar legislation at the Statehouse. & # XD;
The controversial school education bill, House Bill 1134, was the topic of discussion at this meeting. Speakers strongly opposed one day which was scheduled to win special votes in the Senate. Several – including Drew Duncan from the South Bend chapter of NAACP – have said it will completely erase black history from the class. & # XD;
“They are trying to erase American history from the literature,” Duncan said. “We are part of this world. We helped build it and we should be proud of it. ”& # XD;
Several lawmakers also described their efforts to oppose Republican-backed legislation. Rep. John Bartlett (D-Indianapolis) said that between education bills and the ban on firearms licenses, lawmakers are sending a hopeless message to Hoosiers. & # XD;
“We want to steal your education but give you a gun,” Bartlett said. “Think about it.” & # XD;
Leaders are also strongly opposed to a number of environmental bills that could unfairly affect black, Brown, and low-income communities. & # XD;
The way the world talks about energy and climate may be more important than ever. & # XD;
The Biden administration is committed to sending 40 percent of all union funds to areas most affected by climate change – including blacks, Browns, and low-income areas. But itâ & # x20AC; & # x2122; s the job of the government to provide most of that money. & # XD;
“How are we going to make our communities, our members, our communities get their fair share?” said Denise Abdul-Rahman, chair of the climate law committee at the Indiana NAACP. & # xD;

Governor Eric Holcomb joined 15 other governors in a letter urging the Biden government to allow countries to manage public finances in their own way and not to value equality and climate change. & # XD;
Among other things, Abdul-Rahman expressed support for the amendment of House Bill 1221 to install electric car charging stations in various locations and House Bill1196 – a bill to allow Hoosiers and homeowners organizations to access solar energy. & # XD;
Abdul-Rahman said the NAACP is against a law that allows companies to store their carbon underground and a bill that encourages small nuclear reactors to be built in the region. & # XD;
