Race Thompson Returning to Indiana For 6th College Season
Indiana Race forward Thompson, who has started 62 consecutive games in Indiana, announced Thursday night that he will be returning to Bloomington for a sixth season. This is a huge advantage for coach Mike Woodson, who doesn’t have much depth up front on his current roster.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Race Thompson became a key part of the Indiana basketball team under Mike Woodson last season, and it was so much fun that he decided to come back again.
Thompson, a native of Plymouth, Minn., has been in Indiana for five years, but he’s taken advantage of the COVID-19 bonus year to “get it back on track,” as he put it on social media Thursday night announcing his return to Hoosier.
“I trust Coach Woodson and his plans for me to develop into the best player I can be to take my game to another level,” Thompson said Thursday night.
Thompson 6-foot-8 was the team captain a year ago, and had his best season as a Hoosier. He averaged 11.1 points per game and 7.5 rebounds, also his career best. He has also become little more of a perimeter threat, making 15 three-pointers after only making six totals in the previous three years.
Thompson started and played in all 35 games last year, playing up front with close friend Trayce Jackson-Davis. They have been playing together for three years now, and there is some concern about what the two of them will do beyond this season. Thompson was the first domino to fall.
Jackson-Davis, the team’s top scorer and rebounder, declared for the NBA Draft last week, but he didn’t hire an agent and kept his college eligibility options open. Only the first-round pick gets a guaranteed contract, and he’s not the first-round pick in one of the most popular dummy concepts. He picked the second round in some, but many others didn’t get him drafted at all.
Thompson and Jackson-Davis were roommates and best friends. Thompson’s return is good news for Indiana fans who hope Jackson-Davis will return as well.

Thompson was reclassified to enroll early in Indiana, and wore a red shirt his freshman year. He played just nine games in 2018-19, but then played in 29 the following year. He started all 27 games in 2020-21, and is averaging 9.2 points per game. But the Hoosiers left just 12-15 that year and Archie Miller was fired.
Mike Woodson, a former Indiana great from 1976-80, was hired as head coach and persuaded Thompson to stay, vowing to expand his game. It all paid off, as Thompson was an honorable mention of an all-Top Ten by the media.
Thompson had a Senior Evening ceremony in early March, but left the door open to returning. The Hoosiers won two games in the Top Ten Tournament and earned an invitation to the NCAA Tournament, their first in six years.
Indiana beat Wyoming, but then lost to Saint Mary’s in Portland, Ore.
